The idea of lifelong learning (LLL) is fully in line with the modern approach to business, including a focus on employee development, professionalisation and specialisation of professional competences. Studies commissioned by the EU institutions emphasise that professional economic and social activities are a source of competences at least equivalent to formal education. And each level of qualification can be reached by different routes. Therefore, within the framework of the new education model, emphasis is placed on promoting the involvement of employers in improving the competences and qualifications of employees, orienting adult education towards filling competence gaps, such as the "digital gap" (lack of ICT competence), as well as developing a system of support for enterprises in the education and training of employees and the use of external training.
There is a noticeable trend on the Polish labour market of an increasing number of employers indicating the need for further training of their employees in their competences, which is related to the increasing specialisation of Polish enterprises and the employers' conviction that the quality of competences possessed by employees testifies to the innovativeness of the enterprise. Such professional competences as competence in the use of new technologies, including knowledge of information technology, as well as flexibility and willingness to learn, group functioning and interpersonal communication skills are highly rated.
